Derrick Rose: When Jokes Stop Being Funny

Jokes are made up just to make people laugh. But, when making a joke about someone, you have to make sure that person does not get hurt with it. And, as you may know, there are plenty of NBA memes and jokes about players or teams, especially on Twitter and Facebook. However, the problem comes up when these jokes involve personal matters or issues these stars have. This gets even worse when a professional basketball analyst jokes about players’ health.

During last Sunday’s game between the Bulls and the Knicks, D-Rose and his 1-year-old son were in the United Center enjoying the game. When cameras pointed at Rose’s kid, Jeff Van Gundy (who was commentating the game) decided to speak his mind. He said the following: “I hope he has better knees than his dad.” Some people can find this funny, but it is actually disrespectful. The fact that the 2011 MVP has knee issues does not imply that jokes are allowed about that topic. After recovering from a torn ACL, he tore his meniscus in November, allowing the jokes resurgence.

Since his first injury, jokes about “The Return” became popular in all types of media. Accounts have been specifically created to laugh about Rose’s injuries, kept on making inappropriate jokes about it. The reason why these jokes started was because Derrick took a whole season to return and ball again with the Bulls. After he got injured again, Twitter and Facebook exploded. Most of the jokes make reference to the fact that Derrick took too much time to get back to play in the league, even though he was physically ready to go. However, he felt he was not mentally ready. But, why tell you all of this when you probably have had your timeline full of these type of Tweets? Well, because they are not done yet. This was a personal decision that Rose analyzed. He understood what not playing meant, and what being patient and waiting until next season entailed. Therefore, he decided what was best for his own career and the future of the team. Then, why laugh about that? What is the point? Maybe, making him feel sorry about his decision?

The point is that jokes like these hurt players. The process they go through to get back on the court after these painful injuries is long and tough, both physically and mentally. Furthermore, one of the worst things a father (Derrick) can hear, is that jokes are being made about his son’s health. The Bulls’ point-guard has demonstrated he is a strong individual. He does not care about the media, rumors, and jokes. He has his mind set on only one thing: returning to the Bulls’ lineup and leading them to the ultimate prize. He is apparently having a speedy recovery as he is now taking jump-shots and sprinting at full speed. He will probably not play until next season or this year’s playoffs. That is actually a great idea when analyzing players like Metta World Peace and Russell Westbrook who required another surgery just because they returned extremely quickly. Jokes about Derrick Rose’s knees and health have to stop, because jokes are not funny when they hurt others. Enough is enough.
